About me

My name is Hani, I’m a researcher in paleontology with my fair share of contributions in the field. I also own a small private geology-paleontology museum. What does paleontology have to do with birds? A lot in fact! Paleontology requires one to find new fossils and finding new fossils requires finding new localities, something that can only be achieved through fieldtrips. In our fieldtrips all around the country, we were destined to encounter all sorts of animals including birds. Birds started to draw closer to my attention back in 2002-2003 during our intense fieldtrips to the Eastern Plateau where we would encounter migrating flocks of large eagles resting on the rocks or soaring high up. Waders, ducks and stilts foraging in rain flood pools and terns feeding of water surface were a spectacle during early winter morning hours. All I had at the time was a Sony high zoom camcorder and a phone; back then phones did not possess advanced cameras. Occasionally taking a video, I was satisfied watching the birds whenever opportunity presented itself. I bought my first zoom camera back in 2012, an affordable Canon SX40hs a year after the release of powershot cameras. With that camera in hand, I could begin to document the stunning diversity I encountered along the way with intent touse the data that will may eventually accumulate.

The Canon SX40 hs had a 40x zoom, good enough for many birds but certainly not for all. By 2018, the camera market was littered with high zoom cameras and from among the available, Nikon P900 seemed interesting especially with its 83x optical zoom lens; such zoom should do it and I got myself one in January of 2018. With this fine zoom in my hand, I started going on trips solely for the purpose of documenting birds hence you will come to notice that a good majority of photos in this page were taken in

To supplement my knowledge on the subject of local birds, their habitats and distribution, I bought a rare and hard to come by book about the wild birds of Jordan, “The Birds of the Hashemite Kingdome of Jordan” by Ian J Andrews published in 1995. This is a fine book that lists 374 species and includes 129 color photographs of various birds. Now that there are many birds in my database, I needed to identify them. The majority were not difficult to identify however waders and warblers proved otherwise. To compliment the identification techniques beyond the web and relying on friends recommendations, I acquired a detailed book about the birds of Europe including the Levant and north Africa. The book is the “Collins Bird Guide” which proved quite helpful. I owe a debt of gratitude to Fouad Itani, president of the Lebanese alliance for the protection of birds, a bird expert and a photographer who never hesitated to answer any questions I had and for his assistance identifying some of the harder species.

The page

Welcome to the Birds of Jordan web page.  The main intent of this effort is to introduce the general public to the diversity of birds that dwell, breed and visit the country of Jordan. With the aid of photos that will help visitors identify species accompanied with relative information pertaining to each species, it is aspired this effort as basic as it may be will eventually enhance better appreciation and recognition of this precious winged treasure all around us and instigate more interest in birds which may eventually lead to better protecting them and enjoying them rather than poaching and killing them for sport, pleasure or food. We live in a very balanced planet, birds are part of this planet and hence contribute to this intricate and delicate balance. We humans are responsible for keeping the balance.

"And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance, That you not transgress within the balance" Qur'an 55:7-8

There are three main sections to this page, the “Home” page, “Birds” page, and the “All Species” page. The “Home” page is straight forward, it briefly introduces the visitor to the various regions of the land of Jordan and its avian diversity. The “Bird” page is where you will find all species of Jordan birds recorded with photos and relevant information. Species are systematically arranged; species within families within orders. If you are unfamiliar with bird taxonomy , you can always go to the “All species page” and there, if you know the common name of the bird you can search for it “CNTRL>F” then click on its family (hyper link) and you will be sent to the right page or you can refer to it by following the menu on the “Bird” page. The “All Species Page” also includes many cards with bird pictures and direct links to each. This should help those who are looking forward to identifying a bird they spotted without being familiar with its name. In essence, this page serves as a very large menu to the entire sight. To make this website as informative and interactive as possible, almost all photos will provide additional information mostly in Arabic simply by pointing the cursor to them.

This is a continually developing site, that is, as new species are spotted , photographed, and identified they will be added to it. Notification of all recently added species will appear in “Home” page under the box entitled Recently added. Information will also include the date the species was added. To find it quickly, refer to the page “All species” and look for it and from their follow the link(s).

Although I do my best to be as accurate as possible, I’m still fallible. Visitors to this page may spot some mistakes in identification, spelling errors…etc. I encourage them to get back to me through the Contact page and inform me of the errors and such will be greatly appreciated.

All the photos in this page were photographed by myself in Jordan otherwise it will be clearly indicated. All the photos on this page carry my signature, unfortunate as it may be but there are some devoid of morals who will readily steal your work or parts of it and claim it for themselves. The signature on the photo will serve as a temporary obstacle and reminder for web thieves not to forget mentioning the ability of any page owner to report and take down any page on the Net that infringes on his/her intellectual property and copyrights.
